The University of Auckland General Library provides a diverse range of spaces for students to collaborate, connect, and study.

While the existing furniture supported these activities, there was a clear need to introduce additional modular, reconfigurable seating, creating more interest within the space and enabling students to come together in a more flexible, informal way.

The goal was to enhance the environment by:

·         Encouraging group collaboration

·         Introducing adaptable, multi-use seating

·         Creating a visually engaging feature within the existing space

Working within the existing layout, BFG identified an opportunity to introduce a unique furniture solution that would complement, rather than compete with, the surrounding environment.

Our approach included:

• Designing a layout using a combination of curved and straight modular elements
• Carefully working around structural constraints such as pillars and existing furniture
• Ensuring the configuration maximised usability while maintaining clear circulation paths

The selected colour palette was thoughtfully aligned with the existing interior elements, including artwork and furniture, creating a cohesive and well-integrated design.

The result is a visually striking and highly functional modular seating solution that has become a natural hub for student interaction.

The space now offers:

·         Flexible seating arrangements that support both group and individual use

·         A dynamic zone that encourages collaboration and connection

·         A design feature that enhances the overall aesthetic of the library 

The modular nature of the solution also ensures future flexibility, allowing the layout to be reconfigured as needs evolve—supporting long-term use and sustainability.
